I’m on an (usual white-male) Oscar high! The Oscars 2020 Nominees

I’m on an Oscar high! The Academy announced its final nominations just today (Philippine time). 24 Oscar categories are coveted this year, with Warner Bros. Joker bagging the most nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix, and Best Director for Todd Philipps.

As usual, there are a lot of issues circulating in The Academy again. There are only a very few females that have been nominated, and the best director isn’t even one of them, making this year the second consecutive time without a female Best Director nomination. The list of nominees is also male white-dominated, which I already expected. Based on Oscar’s history, all categories have almost always been male-dominated, with lead characters in the nominated films being predominantly male.

Jennifer Lopez’s take on the character Lorene in Hustlers made a lot of waves in the critics, so I am wondering why she didn’t make it to the cut. Akwafina, the Golden Globes Best Actress winner, along with her film The Farewell didn’t make it to  either. These occurrences makes me question the academy once again.

Parasite, by Bong Joon Ho makes Oscar history as the first Korean film to earn a Best Picture and Best Foreign Film nomination.

I, as an Asian, however, found a representative through Bong Joon Ho, for the film Parasite, which garnered 6 nominations including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film. I’m not just being hopeful, but I am being objective when I say that Parasite, (after winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes), has a big shot in the 92nd Academy Awards. However, based on some Oscar history, this has not been the case. The Academy has had several critics regarding their choices, with this vlogger lavishly exposing what the Academy’s real business is about.

Joker earns 11 nominations this year.

In 2018 and 2019, I skipped Oscars because of all these issues, but this year, I decided to take part in its promotions because I’ve seen most of the films that are nominated. What can’t be more excitable? In lieu of that, I present to you the 92nd Oscars Nominations:

The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. I have yet to confirm if METRO Channel (Skycable) will livestream the Oscars, but they usually do so every year (at around 7-am PST for the Red Carpet on February 10 for this year). You may also check out the Oscars official website for streaming updates.
