HONOR to Launch AI Eye-Tracking Feature Soon
HONORtheChallenger Explores the Potential of Multimodal AI to Support People with Reduced Mobility
In the race to develop cutting-edge technology, the unique needs of people with disabilities are often overlooked. International ALS foundations have been tirelessly advocating for innovation that can transform the lives of these communities. HONOR, a brand known for its commitment to human-centric innovation, is set to make history as the first smartphone manufacturer to introduce intent-based eye-tracking technology in its MagicOS 8.0 operating system. This AI-powered feature will allow users to control their smartphones with just their eyes, enabling them to open notifications and apps seamlessly. The global rollout of this feature is scheduled for August 27, 2024.
“ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that gradually robs individuals of muscle function,” explains Limore Noach, Executive Director of the ALS Foundation Netherlands. “As the disease advances, eye movement often remains one of the few controllable functions.” Noach emphasizes that people diagnosed with such life-altering conditions often discover a renewed sense of purpose and seek ways to contribute meaningfully.
HONOR is dedicated to advancing research and is also exploring non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies in its R&D labs. These technologies enable communication between the brain and external devices through electrical brain signals, opening up new possibilities for individuals with disabilities. Wei Zhang, a 34-year-old from China who has battled ALS for 26 years, recently experienced this groundbreaking technology, which allows him to interact with a computer using brain signals. HONOR envisions a future where AI-driven interactions between smartphones and other devices empower people with disabilities or those needing additional assistance.
HONOR the Challenger: Promoting Global Awareness Through Social Engagement
To spotlight the ALS community and honor those who bravely face the disease, BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions has created a short film featuring artist and ALS advocate Bernard Muller. The film showcases how Muller uses eye-tracking technology to express himself through art, highlighting the transformative impact of AI on the lives of people with disabilities.
Social media users are encouraged to join the #HONORtheChallenger campaign to raise awareness about ALS. The challenge is available on TikTok, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook.
